A group of seven accused members of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
