The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
