The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
