RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
