Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
