TikTok Provides The Community Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that allows them to reduce the amount of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the platform revealed that it currently hosts over 1 billion AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a global release. This advancement coincides with a rise in content created by AI, fueled by recent content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that approximately a tenth of the most rapidly expanding channels on a competing service primarily display content made by AI. A significant portion of this output is considered “AI slop”, a term for inferior, mass-produced content that is frequently absurd or surreal.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we want to give people the power to increase or decrease of that, based on their own preferences,” commented a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok announced that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its app identified as AI-generated. In total, over 100 m videos are added to the app each day, making AI-generated material a minor percentage of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Members will be capable of limit or boost the amount of artificial media they see by using the topic control feature in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that currently be adjusted under the tool encompass current affairs, clothing, beauty, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s guidelines require content makers to identify lifelike artificially created content, and it forbids dangerous fake videos of celebrities or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is not labeled can be taken down under its community policies.

Additionally, the service will from now on apply an AI-generated label to content made using its built-in AI features, or detected by an cross-platform project for recognizing AI-generated material. This measure is intended to deter users from trying to evade the labeling process.

AI Literacy Programs

The platform is also establishing a two million dollar AI literacy fund for specialists and institutions to create educational content about ethical AI use. This initiative will support non-profit groups focused on teaching programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has supported its moderation strategy, during controversy over proposals to lay off numerous safety staff in the United Kingdom. It is set to cut hundreds of positions in its trust and safety department in London, with labor groups and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A company official explained that people-led review would remain essential, but AI can protect employees by eliminating the most graphic content before it is viewed by humans. TikTok reported a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content handled by safety staff over the last 12 months due to the use of its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to balance people and machines to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of unsafe media as rapidly, which is why a lot of the machine support is proving valuable work at speed.”
