Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
